Observation Narrative
Unusual combination of species for a site that appears to be oligohaline. Spartina patens is the overwhelming dominant; while matted down culms make cover estimation difficult, cover likely exceeds 75%. Plot placed in a small opening not much larger than 100 sq. , adjacent to much more extensive stand dominated by Typha angustifolia and to more open and apparently more diverse vegetation containing Spartina cynosuroides, Kosteletzkya virginica, and Hibiscus moscheutos. Near edge of plot lies 10-15 m from upland edge. No surface water present at time of sampling (11:30 AM). Spartina forms firm mat which traps water beneath, but true water table appears to be ca. 1 m below surface.
